A biosensor using acetylcholinesterase immobilized onto gold microelectrodes for the detection of organophosphates compounds was developed. The degree of inhibition of the acetylcholinesterase by the organophosphates was determined by measuring the oxidation current of the thiocholine produced by the AChE catalyzed hydrolysis of acetylthiocholine. The biosensor detected methyl-parathion concentrations as low as 5 micromotor with good precision, reproducibility and stability. Actual water samples were also tested and showed the feasibility of using these biosensors for field-testing of organophosphate compounds.
