The Eastern New Mexico Rural Water System (ENMRWS) conveyance system comprises raw waterpipelines, raw water pump stations, a storage reservoir, water treatment plant, finished water pump station, andadditional finished water conveyance pipelines. The source water is Ute Reservoir in Quay County, New Mexicoand the project involves construction of a new raw water intake structure. The overall ENMRWS will be constructedin stages, the first of which includes the intake structure, intake tunnel, and pump forebay shaft. In addition to thedrill and blast pump station shaft, a 54-inch intake pipe will be tunneled to a newly constructed underwater benchwithin Ute Reservoir using microtunneling and pipe jacking. Subsurface conditions include sandstone bedrock withjointing that is in direct connection to the reservoir. The paper presents design considerations, baselines, andconstruction observations related primarily to selection and implementation of a microtunneled intake withsubaqueous recovery of the tunneling machine.
