Fuel-based emission profiles suggested that the average emission profiles for the sampled vehicles in low SES cities were roughly 2-3 times greater for CO, NO_x, BC, and UFP, and 4-11 times higher for PM_(2.5) compared to a high SES community. Low SES areas also have significantly higher occurrences of HE and this disparity was especially pronounced for PM_(2.5) high emitter. It was also noticed that approximately 14% of a sample fleet contributes half of the total emissions for BC and NO_x, whereas for CO, PM_(2.5), and UFP, less than 5 % of the vehicles contribute about half of the total emissions. In general, it is observed that controlling the top 5% of the PM_(2.5) high emitting vehicles would yield the highest co-benefits for other pollutants. These research applications highlight the importance of programs to identify and repair or scrap on-road high emitting vehicles.
