Electrical engineering course using PBL — The lighting of historical buildings

This work aims at various approaches to lighting systems, namely public buildings, with the purpose of promoting illumination, as well as analysing the current lighting systems and the possible replacement for more modern and more efficient lighting systems. With the search for new technologies to meet the needs of man, increasing visual comfort and lowering energy consumption. The intention was to create a methodology that uses a technology to guarantee good energy efficiency levels by reducing gas emissions, as established by the Kyoto Protocol, which compels developed countries to limit the release of greenhouse gases. Using DIALux software, a possible lighting system simulation for the exterior of the Law Court in Coimbra was carried out using LED light sources. The approach methodology was the use of simulation software, applied to a practical project, followed by a detailed presentation of the case by the students, with an autonomous project proposal, for evaluation. It was also defined the correct way of applying the legislation, in the aspects of energy performance. This paper analyses the evaluation of students by implementing Project Based Learning (PBL) in a final subject of an engineering course. The learning process promotes group discussion and analysis of problems by students.
