Teaching enterprise organization and enterprise resource planning systems in schools: Playing a serious game with pupils

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are used in all kinds of organizations today. They represent the structure of a company, the integration of business processes and enable company-wide and cross-company collaboration. End-user training on ERP systems is expensive but required to prevent refusals of system use and project failures. While ERP systems have been part of university teaching in Information Systems (IS), Economics, and Computer Sciences for more than a decade, they are scarcely used in schools. There exists hardly any scientific literature about teaching pupils ERP systems. We want to share our experiences with playing an ERP system-based serious game with pupils and discuss why we think this is a reasonable approach for improving and extending school teaching to prepare future IS and Engineering students. Furthermore, we want to propose an approach for integrating a learning unit for introducing ERP systems using a serious game from eleventh grade on.
