In this paper, a nonlinear model predictive control scheme for the control of a waste heat recovery system (WHR) based on the organic Rankine cycle for a heavy duty truck is presented. For dynamic state estimation, a scheme based on the moving horizon estimation technique is used. As a result, the system is controlled using easily measurable quantities as inputs. System nonlinearities, operational constraints and performance optimization criteria are explicitly taken into account. The proposed scheme enables the WHR to generate around 2 [%] more energy than standard PI and LQG controllers.
