DIFFICULTIES IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF VETERINARY INSPECTION OF FOOD IN OUR COUNTRY

In the past, the doctrine of "One Health Initiative" and the small number of public veterinarians in Greece have allowed medical doctors to handle issues of veterinary public health and act accordingly, which then they tried to get benefit of their own profession. In contrast to that happening in the capital, where meat inspection had come under the jurisdiction of veterinarians, thanks to the actions and initiatives developed by the veterinary pioneers (Pilavios, Petrides), in the rest of Greece, the doctors, took advantage of the numerical insufficiency of veterinary graduates and the "law windows", they were exclusively claiming the veterinary public health authority. This desire has been always shouldering and coming into the foreground with every opportunity, aiming to substantially remove the inspection of food of animal origin from the veterinarians of the Ministry of Agriculture and to give it under the authority of the Medical Centers. Incidence of such behavior have been recorded repeatedly.
