An improved morphological skeleton extraction (MSE) algorithm is proposed, which aims at the traditional problems that the skeleton connectivity and nonsingle pixel width are unsatisfied. Incorporating the strength of the structural elements of image pixel in the crossing scoop, the proposed algorithm has remarkable advantage of being able to improve the poor connectivity of skeleton and solve the problem of non-single pixel width. The proposed algorithm has attracted special attention due to its consistent performance in skeleton connectivity and thinning of single pixel width, that is, has good stability of skeleton morphology, thinning efficiency, noise immunity in the cracks and defects of parts surface and pseudo branch rejecting. Some experiment results are given to support of this claim.
