A review of research activities in the domain of tellurium dioxide-based materials (largely in glassy form) developed at the SPCTS laboratory of Limoges (France) since more than ten years is presented. Especially, the role of their chemical constitutions in the exceptional nonlinear optical properties is detailed. Second and third harmonic generation properties measured for tellurite glasses and for disordered tellurite crystalline compounds are described. Ab initio studies of the nonlinear optical properties of these materials are also discussed.
