Residential Spatial Differentiations and Social Exclusions in Urban Areas of China

The purpose of this paper is to develop a study frame of urban residential space differentiation and social exclusion, in which there is an interaction among economics, policy, social-cultural and external environmental forces. In some urban areas of China residential spatial differentiation is becoming more and more significant, which has lead to residential segregation and social exclusion. In this paper, an analysis framework for the urban residential spatial differentiation and social exclusion was developed, in which economic, institutional, social-cultural and external environmental factors interact. The results show that the gaps in both occupations and incomes are the economic foundation of residential spatial differentiation; misappropriate policy arrangements in housing, land use and household registration system are the institutional foundation;the changes of neighborhood relationships are the social-cultural foundation;and rapid urbanization strengthens this process. So as to construct harmonious societies and communities, various measurements involved with politics, economy and social-culture should be made to inhabit residential spatial differentiation and to eliminate residential segregation and social exclusion.
