A Method for Segmentation of IR Image with Ship in Sky-sea Backgrounds

By analyzing the ship features of infrared (IR) image in sea-sky backgrounds, this paper introduces a method for segmentation IR image with ship in sky-sea backgrounds. This method will extract the chimney features of ship in the IR image, and provide a base to recognize a ship by the features like forms and positions of chimney. Usually it’s difficult to find a suitable method to segment an IR image in sea backgrounds because its gray level changes sharply. The sea-sky line is used as a benchmark, a small image window including the ship is cuts out. Two threshold-based segmentation methods based on the variance of the image gray level is applied to this small image window. Finally an algorithm of the segmentation is built.
