Domestic Water Lifting Practice in Urban Areas: A Survey and Some Useful observations

Electric water pumps have become almost an essential commodity for urban households with millions of them being used. Hence considerable amount of electric energy is used for water lifting application. Any attempt to save even a small amount of energy in this area will result in conservation of cumulatively larger amount of energy. Optimizing the pump design will make them compact and less costly benefiting the customers who are large in number. With this as the background, a survey was conducted in an urban area to give an insight into domestic water lifting practice. Present paper brings out the details of this survey covering about 300 houses. Typical observations have emerged with regard to the very scheme of water lifting, the appropriateness of pump rating etc. These findings open up opportunities to system designers and engineers for introducing new efficient schemes of water lifting, optimization of pump capacity etc. One of the observations has already led to the proposal of a novel scheme, called Individual Floor Storage Method (IFSM), for water pumping.
