In the field of hydrogen purification membranes, alternative multilayer membrane architectures using a palladium thin layer deposited onto a metallic substrate are currently under consideration in many teams. Unfortunately, the Pd and the Ni based substrate alloy interdiffuse, damaging the membrane performance at working temperatures close to 600°C.We have developed an original and fast method to analyze the diffusion mechanisms in multilayer systems in order to validate the efficiency of diffusion barrier layers. In this paper we present this new method and the first results obtained for a Pd/TiN/Ni stack at elevated temperature.
