A comparative study of new solid state light sources

A series of psycho-physical experiments were carried out to investigate the colour quality of modem light sources, including colour discrimination, colour rendering, colour preference and colour harmony. We investigated white phosphor LEDs of "high" (LED H), "medium" (LED M) and low" (LED L) CRI values, an RGB LED cluster, as well as fluorescent and filtered halogen lamps. The experimental results were analyzed statistically. For colour rendering, correlations were determined between our visual data and 3 different colour difference formulae - CIECAM based formulae yielded the best correlations. For discrimination, the LED H test lamp showed the lowest error rates and the RGB LED cluster produced the highest error rates. For colour harmony, phosphor LED lamps produced good perceived harmonies and the RGB LED cluster produced weak harmonies. For colour preference, samples under the white phosphor LED lamps were usually preferred to the fluorescent or halogen lamp but they were not preferred if they were illuminated by the RGB LED lamp.
