The need for elemental analysis and chemical-composition-based material separation will be demonstrated for scrap metal alloys, including aluminum alloys. Sorting of a few known alloys in the manufacturing scrap stream will be compared to the batching of a secondary alloy from an unknown mixture of post-consumer scrap. The capabilities of LIBS, XRF and PGNAA (neutron activation) for quantitative elemental analysis will be compared. The analytical capability requirements of process control and high-speed sorting will be contrasted. Examples of successful sorting applications using each of the three technologies will be discussed.
