Enhanceing construction knowledge management in using knowledge breakdown structure maps

Knowledge management is still a very new concept in the information systems field, althoughknowledge management has become well-established in intelligent information systems. Knowledgemanagement is the collection of processes that govern the creation, storing, reuse, maintenance,dissemination, and utilization of knowledge. Knowledge management deals with collection of processesthat govern creation, storage, reuse, maintenance, dissemination and evaluation of Knowledge in aparticular situation or problem solving context. The Knowledge can be reused and shared among theinvolved engineers and experts to improve the construction process and reduce the time and cost ofsolving problems. This paper proposes a new and practical methodology to capture and representengineers’ Knowledge and project knowledge by using Knowledge Breakdown Structure Maps (KBSM)approach. Using KBSM, users can get an overview of available and missing previous Knowledge coreproject areas and take appropriate management in tacit and explicit Knowledge. This study addressesapplication of Knowledge management in the construction phase of construction projects and proposes aConstruction KBSM-based Knowledge Management (ConKKM) concept and system for contractors. TheConKKM system is then applied in selected cases study of a commerce building project in Taiwan toverify our proposed methodology and demonstrate the effectiveness of sharing previous Knowledgespecial in the construction phase. By effectively KBS and web technology during the construction phaseof a project, Knowledge can be captured and reused to benefit future projects. The combined resultsdemonstrate that, a ConKKM system can be an effective platform for visual Knowledge management inother construction projects by utilizing web technology and KBSM.
