Epicyclic gear trains with multi-degrees of freedom have found its wide-ranging application as the development of new technique. Currently, nearly all research on epicyclic gear trains with three or more degrees of freedom is closely related to the practical application, while that on the composition of gear trains and synthesis are not investigated systematically. In this paper kinematic chain with ten bar or more are applied to innovative synthesis of epicyclic gear trains with multi-degrees of freedom, the characteristics of kinematic chain which can be converted to epicyclic gear trains is analyzed and structure principle of mechanisms and innovative synthesis technique are presented. A structural prototype of epicyclic gear trains with multi-degrees of freedom is obtained by substituting lower pair with higher pair. Meanwhile, it can be applied to design new type epicyclic gear trains. This technique provides a new tool for innovative synthesis used in the epicyclic gear trains design.
