Design for Manufacturing (DFM) is a critical process in developing and designing new products, transferring products between facilities, and improving existing products. It enables manufacturing robustness by driving a holistic understanding of the interactions between fitness for use specifications, materials used, process aims, and process tolerances. DFM is about trade-offs and requires knowledge of both product and manufacturing goals to make the best decision for revenue and earnings growth. Kodak's Imaging Materials and Manufacturing Organization has established a strong DFM process utilizing cross-functional teams, predictive mathematical models to simulate manufacturing performance, and small-scale experiment capabilities for rapid prototyping. These tools are used to minimize waste and increase manufacturing effectiveness throughout product life cycles.
