Mucoadhesion activity of drug delivery systems have noticed an increase in developmental activity recently. As nasal deivery of compounds become a more viable route of administration, either for convenience or therapeutic reasons; an excipient with mucoadhesive activity will prove to be an important component to the final product. Prior to formulating a mucoadhesive excipient into a nasal delivery system some consideration must be given to the target area. The nasal passage which runs from the nasal valve to the nasopharynx is approximately 12-14 cm in depth, and is comprised of three distinct zones, the vestibula, respiratory and olfactory. Lining the nasal passage is a layer of epithelial cells which may or may not exhibit olfactory activity.
