Abstract: Emerging commercial applications of electron-beamadvanced oxidation technology offer a significantadvancement in the treatment of waste steams. Bothelectron beam and X-ray (Brehmsstrahlung) advancedoxidation processes have been shown to be effective inthe destruction of volatile and semivolatile organiccompounds. Emerging commercial applications, however,far exceed in scope current applications of oxidationtechnologies for the destruction of simple semivolatileand volatile organic compounds in water. Emergingapplications include direct treatment of contaminatedsoil, removal of metal ions from water andsterilization of water, sludges, and food. Applicationof electron beam advanced oxidation technologies arereviewed, along with electron- beam-generated X-ray(Brehmsstrahlung) advanced oxidation processes.Advantages of each technology are discussed along withadvanced accelerator technologies which are applicablefor commercial processing of waste streams. An overviewof the U.S. companies and laboratories participating inthis research area are included in this discussion.!18
