A novel surface-bonded type of linear ultrasonic motor with single-phase excitation is proposed, simulated, and investigated in this paper. It provides the advantages of compact structure, simple control system, and low manufacturing cost. The surface-bonded-type piezoelectric transducer is constructed by a variable cross-section straight beam bonded with four pieces of piezoelectric ceramic plates, which serves as the stator of the proposed linear ultrasonic motor. By applying an electric signal to the desired piezoelectric ceramic plates, the longitudinal-bending coupling vibration is generated by the piezoelectric transducer, leading to the production of elliptical motion in the driving tip. Thus, the slider can be driven by the friction to achieve a linear motion. To analyze the dynamic behavior of the piezoelectric transducer, finite element simulation study is carried out. A prototype of the piezoelectric transducer is fabricated and tested to verify the simulation results. Moreover, experimental investigation is conducted to evaluate the output performance of the proposed linear ultrasonic motor.
