Architectural and urban design practices are mostly concentrated on the visual aspects and measures. However, urban spaces and soundscapes are experienced with all senses in addition to the social, physical and personal characteristics of the user. Visual and auditory signals received from the environment play a big role in the embodiment of the unique set of a current scenery, since those signals influence the perception of one another. This study focuses on the effects of the visual perception on the auditory perception of the urban public space combining methodologies related to a holistic approach. Soundcapes and urban qualities of two urban squares in Berlin are investigated using perceptual and physical analysis in an interdisciplinary approach. In the first step, the squares were observed and analyzed in their architectural and sociological aspects. Following, semi-structural interviews were conducted with the users of the benches and survey-guided soundwalks were led with non-residents of the area. Finally, four positions on each square were determined for video recordings with three cameras designating the perspective of the user and binaural recordings with an artificial head. The collected data of all the steps were then analyzed through integrative diagramming. The results have shown that the expectations, which are created by the building structures, landscaping, design and views of the seating areas, the distance from and the visibility of the sound sources, type of use, the user profile and the social structure of the squares, have considerable influence on the perception and the evaluation of the soundscape. Furthermore, the results were used to prepare an audio-visual installation. Tools and reasons for the artistic approach for reaching out to the designers of urban spaces, and art as a direct form of communication will be discussed.
