In the present work, the hydraulic control system used in position control application is selected for the analysis, which has been modeled as Integral plus Dead Time process model. For any control engineer, dead time is one of the key variables that should be given proper attention while designing the controller. To obtain the process model without dead time, time delay is approximated using Padè's I order approximation. Distinctive PI controllers have been designed by means of different tuning methods for the designated process model and the approximated process model. To analyze the effect of delay approximation on set-point tracing proficiency of the controllers, the time response characteristics have been equated.
