Is the Sky Above us Safe and How Has This Been Influenced by the Past and Present Policies? : Unmanned Aerial Systems and their Cybersecurity Implications

There have been many instances of aircraft collisions in the sky and these have been for a variety of reasons and causes. Technology has been used to address these concerns, yet these have not all been successful for other reasons. Human factors, or the lack of them, has been a common cause in many. There are also many other reasons why and this paper does not focus on all, only the principal ones and how the situation is changing now with more pressure than ever before. This presentation reviews the historical and technical reasons what and why has happened to produce this current situation and how the safety may not be as high as assumed. It also introduces the concerns that Unmanned Aerial Vehicles add and how these are being reviewed to minimize collisions. Furthermore, the risk analysis of these implications due to Security and Cybersecurity is addressed.
