Exploring the Integration of Social Care Education with STEM: A Social-Scientific Maker Curriculum

Maker education is promising for cultivating essential twenty-first-century skills. Despite the growing interest in maker education, it is not yet known how social care education and K12 maker education can be integrated to promote learning. In response, the work-in-progress paper presents an initial exploration of a social-scientific maker curriculum referencing the empathize-define-ideate-prototype-test (EDIPT) model of design thinking. In the curriculum, students identify the needs of people in the community, and investigate feasible solutions to help them. The study provides considerable insight into how K12 and the community can work together to promote maker education and social care.
