Ethical responsibilities of researchers and participants in the development of multimodal interaction corpora

Research on modelling multimodal behavior often requires the development of corpora of human-human or human-machine interactions. The design and implementation of such corpora should attend to ethical principles throughout the overall data management pipeline, from data collection and storage to data processing. This paper describes the methodology we followed to manage the ethical issues that arise for data collection of multimodal interactions, namely the involvement of human participants and the protection of their personal data. We address ethical issues also by linking them to the aspect of the ethical responsibility from the perspectives of both researchers and participants. These topics are addressed based on the experience and observations gathered during the implementation of the MULTISIMO project as a case study.
