The Green Optical Autocovariance Wind Lidar (GrOAWL) instrument is built to serve as an airborne demonstrator for the ATHENA-OAWL (Atmospheric Transport, Hurricanes and Extratropical Numerical weather prediction using the OAWL) mission concept for space-based wind profile measurements. The 532 run wavelength Doppler wind lidar system is currently configured for flight aboard the NASA WB-57 aircraft. The system can make two simultaneous wind measurements along orthogonal lines of sight (to capture u and v components of the wind field). We provide an overview of the system design, architecture and preliminary performance results from May 2016 flight tests out of NASA Johnson Space Center at Ellington Field.
