Influence of occupational commitment on the occupational stability of traditional Chinese medicine doctors in Xianyang

Objective To examine and better understand the status of the occupational commitment and occupational stability of doctors practicing traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in Xianyang. We also explore the influence of occupational commitment on occupational stability. Methods We selected 490 cases of TCM doctors from four Chinese medicine hospitals at the second-class level and above as research objects. Using stratified sampling and cluster sampling, a questionnaire was compiled. The answers gave us a better understanding of the basic situation, occupational commitment and occupational stability of doctors using TCM in Xianyang. Results The scores for occupational commitment and occupational stability were 81.78±14.26 and 15.44±3.58, respectively. In addition, the occupational commitment among those with a technical title, and the occupational stability among certain ages and technical titles all had statistical differences (P<0.05). Every dimension of occupational commitment is evidently related to occupational stability (P<0.05). The multiple regression analysis showed that the proportion of occupational stability interpreted by sex, age, technical title and educational background was 5.28%, but this proportion increased to 29.19% after adding further components of occupational commitment. Age, emotional commitment, normative commitment and opportunity commitment, respectively, had the greatest effects on occupational stability (Beta=0.158, 0.307, 0.217, -0.167). Conclusion Occupational stability is closely related to the occupational commitment of TCM doctors in Xianyang. We also find that age, emotional commitment, normative commitment and opportunity commitment all exert a significant influence on occupational stability.
