OEE: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Lean and OEE) - (PPT)

OEE or Overall Equipment Effectiveness is known as a measure for equipment performance since the first books on TPM have been published in the eighties. As process industry is typically capital intensive, OEE is heavily used as a measure of asset utilization and cost. It is also often a benchmarking KPI for different lines and even different plants. In that case it is important that OEE is calculated in a consistent and correct way. Lean Manufacturing has brought a renewed interest in OEE, however, also in this context, using it the wrong way can drive unwanted, even anti-Lean behavior. This paper will explain the basics and definitions of OEE. After that, following questions will be answered: What needs to be included in the OEE calculation and what not? How can OEE be misused by management or manipulated by the shop floor? What is lean and how can OEE be used in a lean context? How to avoid sub optimization and improve overall value stream performance? OEE as a tool for increasing capacity or for increasing flexibility and flow in value stream?
