A Two-Stage Non-Weighted Goal Programming Approach for Nurse Scheduling Problem by the Consideration of Patient Demand and Shift Preferences of Nurses

In this paper we present two nurse scheduling models associated with a solution algorithm. We consider different aspects of goals in nurse scheduling such as cost reductions, nursing job satisfaction, patient needs fulfillment and nurse idle times diminution to improve hospital service quality. Multi-objective binary integer programming models are introduced for nurse scheduling problem (NSP). Our models consider both nurse shift preferences for job satisfaction and patient demand for customer satisfaction. A two-stage non-weighted goal programming solution method is provided to find an efficient solution for the multiple objective optimization problems.
