MOBIL: Intelligent Agents for Human Centric Modeling and Analysis

We present a "human centric" approach to modeling and analysis of human behavior and human systems, one that focuses on integration of human behavior with classical engineering models of physical systems. Typically these classical models were based on deterministic, Newtonian physics-based representations of the behavior of closed systems. Such models do not adequately account for the open systems nature of human activity, especially with regard to situation awareness and information processing. As an example of the utility of this human centric approach, we present a model of intelligent agents being spatially "lost" while trying to navigate in a simulation world. This model provides a specific, easily understood, and quantifiable example of human behavior with which to explore an individual's perception of his/her environment and the effects of that perception on human decision-making. We have developed a simulation based on that model called MOdeling Being Intelligent and Lost (MOBIL), reflecting the fact that the ability to be in both of these states is central to the simulation. MOBIL serves as a tool to help articulate this human-centric approach, which strives to represent decision-making and other cognitive aspects of human behavior as well as it does physical activity.
