Way back in 1970, Dr. Herbert Strentz in his PhD thesis about press coverage of UFOs, had some very strong comments to make about its inadequacies. More recently Terry Hansen in "The Missing Times" was equally critical. There hasn't been much improvement since though the media has been joined by the Scientific and Astronomical communities in foisting off nonsense instead of solid journalism. It is worth reviewing specific events that provided grossly inadequate coverage. These include the Roswell Incident of early July 1947, the USAF "shoot them down if they don't land when instructed to do so" campaign of 1952, the release of "Project Blue Book Special Report No. 14 in 1955, the Congressional Hearings of July 1968, the release of the University of Colorado study in early 1969 and closure of Project Blue Book in 1969. How different attitudes might be now if the press had done its job then. Perhaps it is significant that the US Government established an official censorship office within 2 weeks of the start of World War 2. Perhaps it was never really closed.
