In this article we demonstrate how bus ride comfort can be improved by extending Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA) system with a novel Green Light Optimal Dwell Time Advisory (GLODTA) concept. The two systems allow a bus to pass traffic signals during a green phase. GLOSA achieves this by providing a vehicle with speed guidance, while GLODTA advices additional dwell time at the bus stop preceding the signals. The two systems not only allow buses to run smoother but they also reduce fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions of a bus. Using computational experiments we demonstrate that when compared with a conventional bus driving technique the proposed extension significantly improves ride comfort. Although the greatest improvement in comfort can be attributed to speed advisory, its further improvement via dwell time extension is significant.
