Modelling and simulation is at the core of future technology developments such as Big Data analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and More Electric Aircraft. The work herein presented explores the adoption of modelling and simulation methodologies based on a Model Based Systems Design approach to support the definition of performance envelopes and verification procedures for the Power Drive Unit (PDU) of a Fowler flap system commonly used on commercial aircraft. Specifically, the work presented will introduce the modelling and simulation of the flap system and the modelling and simulation process used to assess the influence of PDU gearbox ratio using the Simulink flap system model. Three types of analysis are carried out: time histories are provided to understand the key parameters in the system performance; sensitivity study to identify optimal gear ratio for the PDU; and finally the performance envelope of the PDU is evaluated.
