Brief History of the Laurance Reid Gas Conditioning Conference

In the late 1940s and early 1950s the Gas Industry experienced considerable difficulties in relation to gas hydrates forming in gathering lines and main trunk lines which hindered the flow of natural gas. As it was well known that liquid water was necessary for the formation of hydrates, methods for measuring the moisture content of natural gas were sought, both in the field and in the laboratory. W.M. "Mac" Deaton of the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a USBM moisture analyzer based on using a refrigerant and a cold mirror. This device emerged as the best available method for measuring the water content (dew point) of natural gas.
