Conclusions: Characterization of ECM scaffolds from different source tissues showed similar level of ECM components with largest differences coming from dermis-derived scaffolds. When implanted into a model of TMJ meniscus reconstruction, all scaffolds remodeled similarly over 1 month showing that all three ECM sources showed similar abilities to elicit a constructive remodeling response. However, the increased thickness and decreased degradation of dermis ECM seemed to delay the remodeling of dermis-derived TMJ devices. This study illustrates that differences in ECM scaffolds may in some way change the regenerative response but in this model of TMJ meniscus reconstruction, there was not a significant change in remodeling outcomes.
