Smart telemetry kit for proactive health monitoring in rural India: The journey so far and the road ahead

India, the second most populated country in the world, needs to adopt technological solutions in order to provide the greater portion of its population, which is living in rural areas, relief from non-communicable diseases, in a manner that is economical and minimizes hospitalization. In this paper we discuss personal connected health as a technological solution that is relevant to the Indian scenario and explain how the current eco-system in the country is conducive for its adoption. We also describe our implementation of the solution, that can collect and relay clinically relevant information of patients located in rural areas to doctors located elsewhere and allows doctors to communicate clinical advise back to patients. Description covers hardware platform, web platform and dataflow architecture used in the implementation. We also present the findings and learnings obtained from sample trials of the solution in an Indian, rural general hospital.
