Huntington Harbour Dredging Project: Case Study of Dredge Material Re-Use with Multiple Benefits

Periodic maintenance dredging is required for safe navigation for recreational vessels within Huntington Harbour, Seal Beach and Huntington Beach, California, resulting in dredge material that must be moved elsewhere, creating both challenges and opportunities. At Huntington Harbour, the County agency and project engineers worked collaboratively with resource and regulatory agencies to be able to utilize the dredge material for beneficial reuse on adjacent sites. In addition to the direct benefit of restoring channel navigation depths, the dredge project provides sediment for reuse to offset past and ongoing impacts of land subsidence and potential future impacts of rising sea levels at a critical habitat area for endangered bird species. The dredge material can also be used to nourish valuable beach area that provides intertidal habitat, natural shore protection, and enhanced recreational opportunities. This is truly a multiple benefit project.
