In order to improve the accuracy and speed of the system measuring crossing-link polyethylene (XLPE) cable materials contaminants, a method of processing defect information is provided based on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Firstly, the signals exported by CCD, in which materials information is contained, are converted into digital signals by A/D converter. Then the digital signals are input the module processing data based on FPGA, and then is processed in order by threshold calculation unit, comparator and data encapsulated unit. The method of dynamic threshold is adopted to judge if the output signals contain impurity information. According to the feature of XLPE materials with low content of impurites, the uploaded data are not all data but data including defect information. Thus the contaminant information and its position can be abstracted efficiently via high speed of FPGA and special encapsulation format is designed to package data. The simulation results demonstrate that all modules can finish the scheduled functions.
