摘要

The current economic and environmental situation reinforces the debate around the use ofalternative transport systems. Car and bike-sharing schemes meet considerable growth aroundthe world and have the potential to redefine the way people move within modern cities. Publicresponse to these schemes remains an issue of research. In this paper, several types of vehicle sharing systems are analyzed and compared.Furthermore, the authors present an analysis of the data collected from an on-line survey onthe perception of the (dis)advantages and key contributing factors to decisions to join suchsystems by potential users. The analysis is based in a subset (N=233) of young (18 to 35 yearsold) Greek respondents and includes qualitative analysis, as well as econometric models, suchas ordered logit models and factor analysis. The results indicate that the distance of vehicle-sharing stations from people’s houseor job is the most important factor. Respondents with annual income between 15,000 and25,000 Euros (approximately between US$21K and US$35K) report that they are more likelyto join these systems, while those aged 25 to 35 are more reluctant to join bikesharing thanyounger people. Furthermore, self-reported environmental consciousness is correlated with ahigher propensity to join carsharing or bikesharing.
