A Comparison Study on Two Bikesharing Programs in Korea Submitted for Presentation at the 91st Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board

A bikesharing program has several advantages as a sustainable transportationmode such as the promotion of public transport through multi-modality, the reduction ofautomobile dependency, and the contribution to healthy life-styles. However, all ofbikesharing programs do not necessarily become a sustainable transportation mode. Twobikesharing programs, Nubija and TA-SHU, in Korea have similar historical backgrounds,but present completely distinctive features as a transportation mode. Nubija successfullybrings positive impacts on the city’s transportation system by reducing automobile usages andproviding a transportation alternative to large population groups. On the other hand, TA-SHUis only utilized by limited group of people for limited purposes. Therefore, comparing thefeatures, bicycle usage patterns, and users’ travel behaviors of two programs provides insightson the factors that make a bikesharing program a truly sustainable transportation mode. Thedata from users’ surveys and daily operation data indicates that three main factors, users’demographic characteristics, fare system, and the geographical extent of service, make Nubijaa successful sustainable transportation mode.
