Today Germany is facing the challenge of fighting global warming by producing less CO2 simultaneous to a growing energy demand. As a consequence Germany is checking the option of life time extension for nuclear power plants still operating. A major challenge to acquaint especially the German nuclear market with human factors engineering as an important part of the evolutionary development and design process is the adjustment of terms and constructs to German wording and understanding. AREVA's answer to this challenge was the definition of a process specifying the execution of all HFE activities. Using the NUREG-0711 as a framework for this process provides simple, clear structure and wording under which all HFE activities are summarized can be understood all over the international nuclear business. Based upon this human factors engineering process a project specific HFE program was established. HFE activities were defined during the proposal phase with relationship to scope, schedule, and interface requirements with other engineering disciplines. The detailed scope for each HFE activity was determined by an expert evaluation of bid and proposal opportunities. A project specific HFE program was tailored as a basis for the HFE plan, which describes all HFE activities to be implemented during the project, and which defines the full scope of work and provides for reliable resource and cost estimation, as well as allows detailed schedule integration. Since the subject projects are for German modernization projects, this framework is then implemented by executing each element in accordance to European codes and standards.
