TRANSPARENT MATRIX MATERIALS FOR EFFICIENT LUMINESCENT SOLAR CONCENTRATORS

Materials, promising as a transparent waveguide matrix for Luminescent Solar Concentrator (LSC) photoconverters are considered. The relevant properties of the most promising LSC matrix materials, such as fused quartz (amorphous SiO_2), borosilicate glass and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) are analyzed. It is established that the matrix of silicon oxide is transparent in the photoactive spectral region of Sun emission. To date, a low-temperature sol-gel method for the synthesis of SiO_2 doped with quantum dots (QDs) has been developed. For borosilicate (BK7) glasses it is detrimental that the transmission spectrum is narrower than the transmission spectrum of SiO_2. Usually, doping of BK7 with A_2B_6 quantum dots is carried out by the recondensation method at high temperatures, which leads to a low luminescence quantum yield. The smallest losses of luminescent photons from escape cone occurs in the LASF35 022291.541 glass matrix with its refractive index of 2.02204. However, most often the LSCs matrices are made of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). As estimated, the quantum yield of QD luminophores in doped PMMA matrix is close to unity. The luminescent photons losses in matrices made of PMMA, BK7 glass, and fused quartz are analyzed and wavelength dependence of these losses is estimated. The results discussed have to also be considered when investigating properties of photoconverters with luminescent concentrator in the stack.
