Current Status of the ESS Target Station and Target Design Update Work in Juelich

During the design phase of ESS until 2003 the work was focused on a liquid mercury target. The ESS target station including all auxiliary system was designed to the boundary conditions given by a mercury target. During the recent ESS design update phase, the solid rotating target, in 2003 only considered as a fall back solution, becomes more and more a valid alternative and may even become the primary choice. In addition more and better information about the radiation damage of components in the close vicinity of the target are available leading to necessary changes in the handling concept for these components. While some systems and design concepts will remain, a thorough update of the design of the target station will be necessary to optimize the general layout and design of subsystems to the changed boundary conditions. The presented work will give an overview over the necessary design changes and potential new design concepts for the ESS target station as well as recent work on the rotating target itself In addition an optimized flow pattern for a possible liquid metal target will be presented.
