25 Years of Boat Design in Industrial Design at Coventry University

Boat Design as a discipline within Industrial Design was a natural evolution of the world renowned Automotive Design course,which has been in existence for nearly 40 years.The opportunity for aesthetic resolve was an obvious opportunity for technology transfer from automotive design.This paper reviews the boat design industry as well as the course structure of Boat Design at Coventry,and the importance of professional placements.Teaching at Coventry is underpinned by research,to facilitate this The Centre of Excellence in Product and Automotive Design (CEPAD) builds upon the recognized strengths of the department.Its prime focuses are upon three inter-related pedagogical strands of enquiry:threshold concepts in design;examining the development of spatial awareness;and,internationalization of the design curriculum.A review of recent boat design internationalization activities is given.The Boat Design innovation Research Group (BDIRG) has the research objective of technology transfer from the automotive sector to the marine sector,its current research activities are delineated.
