In this paper, a trajectory-based optimization method to design FACTS in power systems is proposed, in which both the quality of transient process and the investment cost of FACTS devices can be judiciously considered. To solve this high nonlinear optimization problem, an improved differential evolution (DE) method is proposed. In the DE evolution, a chaotic operation is introduced in the algorithm when there stagnation symptom occurs. The proposed method is investigated on a 10-machine and 39-bus New England test system and the primary studies have shown its effectiveness and potential.
