Compact Unmanned Landers for Deep Sea Research

Engineers and scientists at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) and The University of Queensland, Australia (UQ), have recently developed a low-cost, versatile, autonomous video lander system for deep sea research. The system, named "Medusa" can be used to unobtrusively observe deepwater fauna on the seafloor or in midwater, down to 2000m, without the need for an underwater deployment vehicle. Three Medusas are currently in use and more are planned for construction. The presentation will focus on the design and development of the Medusa system, its technical features and deployment modes, and results from recent research expeditions off the coasts of the United States, Australia, and South America.
