The moving shape functions method is a new formulation for the modeling of deformable tracks in multi-body railroad dynamics. This method was recently presented by the authors. It uses a special floating frame of reference approach in which the rail deformations are described using shape functions defined in a trajectory frame of reference. Because the shape functions are defined in a frame that moves with respect to the flexible body the inertia forces of the flexible track include additional convective terms. Results of the transient and steady curving for an unsuspended wheelset travelling on flexible curved tracks are shown.
