Empirical Analysis for Hub-Airport Choice as International Transit Point in Japan: Narita, Kansai, and Chubu

摘要

The purpose of this paper is to find out the motivations of passengers making transit on an international flight at Narita, Kansai and Chubu airport in Japan. This paper uses the exclusive micro data of “International Passengers Traffic Movement Survey” in 2009 and 2010 conducted by Ministry of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Japan. It enables us to observe unique characteristics in each airport that motivates passengers to choose an airport as one’s transit point: Connection time, Alliance network, Airport Facility and so on. By using this data, this paper analyzes the factors for Hub-Airport Choice as International Transit Point in Japan based on Multi-nomiallogit model with a consideration of endogeneity among variables. The result gives us implications to improve the attractiveness of the airports as an international transit point while there has a severe intra-airport competition in Northeast Asia region.
