Dense, aligned and clean multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) can be obtained by an aerosol-assisted catalytic CVD process. A successful extension of this method has been performed in order to obtain MWCNT growth even on carbon fibres and on metallic surfaces, using a modified injection-CVD process. This process involves two stages, including fibre pre-treatment by depositing ceramic sub-layers followed by CNT growth, that both take place in the same reactor in only one global and fast step. Fibrous, porous or flat carbon substrates, as well as metals, can easily be treated with this process. It is possible to tune the composition (e.g. SiO_2 or ZrO_2), thickness and morphology of the sub-layers. The characteristics of the CNT obtained on such covered substrates are compared with those of CNT obtained on uncovered substrates or on quartz substrates and appear to be very similar to those obtained on quartz substrates, in terms of length, density and by-products yield.
